February 1, 2010
Dear Friend, 2009 ends as one of the roughest financial years I can remember. I can’t help but think how fortunate we are to still have the really important things in life. We are fortunate to have those things money can’t buy; the human touch, people helping people, each of us being there for each other. That’s basically what The Cannon County Senior Center is all about … the human touch. It’s hard to put a price tag on the human touch, but as you get ready for the New Year, consider turning some of your money into an act of kindness. An act of kindness may be providing an emergency meal while a senior is sick, visitation to a lonely senior or the opportunity for a senior to attend a health program; all of these simple acts are given by the Senior Center with a human touch. Can you imagine that pride has a price tag? Well, your donation can actually assure that Mary’s pride stays intact and her lights stay on and isn’t that what life is really all about? Each month at our staff meetings we share mission moments. Mission moments happen when a staff members witness your donations at work. We share stories of how our mission looks in action, “to help the seniors in Cannon County to maintain their independence with dignity.” Tommy one of our HELP volunteers, shared a special mission moment that involved a light bulb. Mary, from Short Mountain called our office to see if we would change her light bulb in the stairway. She avoided using the stairs because the light no longer worked. She wished she could do it herself, so much so, that her original request was for someone to hold the ladder while she changed it herself. Tommy went over to her home and changed the light bulb. Tommy said that he could see the difference he made in her eyes, and hear it in her voice. The impact of this small act of kindness is immeasurable in any conventional way. Although, I think keeping someone’s pride intact and lights on is quite a noble pursuit. Mission moments happen all year long, and we can hardly keep up with them. As an agency that has served the community for 40 years, creating mission moments is just what we do. Last year we served 801, all with the human touch of kindness and compassion. I hope you are blessed with all you need. If this year has been especially tough for you and you need our help please call us. If you have something that you can share, please consider doing something really special this year. Please help turn some of your money into act of kindness for the seniors of our community through the Have a Heart for Senior’s annual campaign.
Warmest Wishes,
Connie C. Rigsby Executive Director |
